Generating heat from the sun
Solar thermal is one of the most profitable ways to cut CO₂ emissions in industry.
Flat plate collectors supply lower-temperature process heat, and solar concentrators supply pressurized steam.
Once installed, the plant delivers heat for decades with no fuel cost and little maintenance. Caloran's partners have built many megawatts of industrial solar heat.

Heat extraction and recuperation
Heat pumps recover waste heat from industrial processes and raise it to a useful temperature.
High-temperature heat pumps now reach above 100°C and can even produce steam. They require a substantial investment, and MW grid connections, but once installed they use only a half to a third of the electricity an electric boiler needs.

Heating when the sun is not enough
Electric boilers are currently the main technology for replacing fossil fuel.
They need a moderate investment and cover a wide range of temperatures and steam pressures. Combined with heat storage, they can run when electricity is cheap.
In many regions, however, the grid lacks capacity for the added load, and expanding it is slow and costly.
Storing the heat for later use
Heat storage moves energy from hours with cheap electricity or strong sun to the hours when the process needs it.
Partial decarbonization needs only small storage volumes, while full replacement of fossil fuel requires storage at large scale. Hot water is still the most common and least expensive medium and Caloran’s partners have delivered projects ranging from large water tanks to pressurized tanks for steam.
